Composer Kalevi Aho (Finland), world renowned for his eight symphonies and 35 concertos, will give an International Masterclass for composers at October Contemporary Music Festival (Uuden Musiikin Lokakuu) in Oulu, Finland, during Thursday 30 September – Sunday 3 October.
The Masterclass will contain two individual lessons for each student. There will also be a workshop and a concert, where the compositions of the students of the Masterclass will be premiered. The workshop and the concert will be given by the K!art Ensemble (Denmark).
Teaching languages are English and Finnish.
The Masterclass is supported by the MES Finnish Music Foundation.
COMPOSER KALEVI AHO (b. 1949, Forssa, Finland) worked as a professor of composition at the Sibelius Academy and in other teaching positions in the early stages of his career.
In the 1990s, Aho was the composer-in-residence of Sinfonia Lahti. After composing a flute concerto for Sharon Bezaly and a clarinet concerto for Martin Fröst, Aho has become one of Finland’s most successful composers of all time. He has composed dozens of concerts for international top soloists, five operas, eight symphonies and numerous large scale chamber music pieces.
Aho has won the Léonie Sonning and Henrik Steffens Composition Awards and has been awarded the Pro Finlandia Medal. Aho has held several positions of trust and is a socially aware writer.
