COMPOSITION MASTERCLASS

There will be a Composition Masterclass given by Markus Fagerudd from Friday 29 September to Sunday 1 October 2017.

 

The students will compose a piece of 3-6 minutes for 1-4 instruments, which can be: violin, viola, cello and accordion.

 

The students’ compositions will be analyzed in two individual lessons and rehearsed in a workshop. The works will be performed in  a concert on Sunday, 1 October 2017. Teaching languages are Finnish, Swedish, English and German.

 

The musicians in the concert and in the workshop are accordionist Veli Kujala and three musicians from the Oulu Symphony: violinist Mikko Sorri, viola player Emiliano Travasino and cellist Riina Salminen.

 

Veli Kujala will also play the quarter tone accordion, if necessary. Short manual about this instrument will be provided to the interested participants.

 

Markus Fagerudd (b. 1961 Pietarsaari) has studied composition in the Sibelius Academy under the direction of Olli Kortekangas and Kalevi Aho. He has also studied in Karlsruhe Music Academy under Wolfgang Rihm.

 

Fagerudd has written works for symphony orchestra, chamber orchestra, solo instruments and choirs, several operas and theatre music. He has been the Composer-in-Residence of the orchestras of Lappeenranta and Vaasa. He is currently working as a lecturer of music at the Theatre Academy of The Helsinki University of Arts.

 

The price of the masterclass

is 195 €, including two individual lessons, the workshop and the performance of the piece in the masterclass concert plus free admittance to October New Music Festival concerts.  Accomodation at the Forenom Hotel is offered for the price of 90 €.

Mr. Markus Fagerudd will select not more than six students for the masterclass. They will be announced on 1 July 2017. Students are required to deliver the score and parts of their finished composition latest by 31 August 2017.
